Choosing a Gion show respectfully

A Gion show makes a performance or cultural meeting a planned part of your visit. That is a different experience from walking through the neighbourhood and learning about its working traditions. In Kyoto, geiko are artists specialising in traditional entertainment and performing arts; maiko are in training. Choose an organised programme if you want time set aside for watching, listening and asking questions, rather than following artists in the street.

The bookable activities on this page differ in how they combine the meeting with a walk, tea or a meal. Gion Corner and the Gion Kagai Art Museum are separate cultural venues with their own programmes and admissions. Their details below help you compare formats; the tour cards are not tickets to either venue. Use the evening walk guide when streets and local history are your main interest.

Walk, performance and dining options

The cultural walk with a geisha meeting starts at the Izumo-no-Okuni statue by Kawabata-Shijo. It combines a district walk with a booked meeting including questions and a performance. A Japanese lunch plate belongs to the lunch option, a cup of tea to the tea-break option, and shared dinner plates to the dinner option. Select the meal setting you want rather than counting all of these choices as one combined menu.

The maiko meeting experience includes a live performance, conversation, a question session and a photo session. Its combined walking option also visits Shirakawa, Hanamikoji and Kennin-ji; the show-only option excludes that walk. There are different meeting points according to the selected format, and socks are required at the venue. The Hanamikoji guide helps you understand the streets visited by the combined activity.

The specifically booked Gion option

The option titled One Hour Geisha Show in Gion meets at MUTEKI Theatre in Daikokucho. It includes traditional Japanese green tea, an English-speaking guide or interpreter and a geisha meeting experience. The product also offers a different Kyoto option with another meeting point, so select the Gion option for this plan. Use the option’s full address when arranging your arrival.

A photograph is part of the booked maiko meeting described above, but photography arrangements remain specific to each event. Listen to the host’s instructions during performances and conversations. Permission for a photo session inside a venue does not extend to people outside, private lanes or other cultural institutions. For the surrounding area, the transport page explains the local access choices.

Gion Corner

Gion Corner presents traditional stage arts in the small theatre at Gion Kobu Kaburenjo. Its programme includes Kyomai, tea ceremony, ikebana, koto, bugaku and kyogen, with bunraku or Noh according to the month. The general adult ticket was 5,500 yen when checked on 3 November 2026. Buy that venue’s own ticket when this is the performance you want; it is separate from the guided meeting experiences.

Regular performances are at 18:00 and 19:00. The recurring winter schedule from 1 December to 11 March operates Tuesday to Friday, excluding national observances. Additional recurring closure dates are 16 July, 16 August, 26 December to 4 January, 11 February and 23 February. Advance tickets and same-day counter tickets depend on availability. Check the venue calendar for your date, especially around the winter programme, rather than assigning the regular schedule to every evening.

Gion Kagai Art Museum

The museum displays Yuzen kimono, Nishijin obi, kanzashi hair ornaments and makeup utensils. On 4, 23, 27 and 28 November 2026, the museum opens at 12:30. These special opening times apply only on those dates. At the 3 November 2026 check, general admission was 1,500 yen. Kyomai costs an additional 1,600 yen, while the photo appointment costs 2,000 yen per group of up to five people. Exhibition admission, dance and the photo appointment are separate choices; decide which experience you want when setting aside time for the visit.

Dance and photo activities take place upstairs without a lift. Recording the dance is prohibited, and staff take the official photograph using the guest’s smartphone. These arrangements differ from a street tour or a restaurant meeting. Kyoto’s visitor guidance dated 2 October 2026 also asks visitors not to touch, follow or photograph geiko and maiko without permission. Keep those boundaries throughout your visit, including the walk between the station, the venue and dinner.

Questions before booking

Do these tour cards include Gion Corner?

They describe separately booked cultural meetings and performances. Gion Corner has its own programme and ticket, so choose that venue separately if it is your intended evening.

Is a museum ticket enough for the dance and photo appointment?

Exhibition admission, Kyomai and photo appointments are separate paid choices. The dance and photo activities are upstairs without a lift.

Does every maiko experience include a street walk?

The combined walking and meeting option includes the district route. The show-only option of the maiko meeting experience excludes the walking portion.
