Where to stay in Gion Kyoto for your plans
When choosing where to stay in Gion Kyoto, begin with the places you intend to visit and the journeys you will repeat. Gion and Higashiyama place you on the eastern side of Kyoto, close to the cultural district around Yasaka Shrine. Shijo-Kawaramachi and neighbouring Pontocho give a central shopping and dining setting across the Kamo. The Kyoto Station area makes arrival and rail connections the focus of your base.
Use these areas as different starting points rather than a ranking. Mark your accommodation address, your arrival station and your first activity on the same map. A useful base for an evening in Gion may be different from one chosen mainly around onward rail travel. Decide which journeys matter to you before comparing individual rooms. For walking ideas, start with the Gion sights guide.
Gion hotels and the eastern walking area
Gion grew around Yasaka Shrine and remains a working neighbourhood of traditional buildings, cultural activity, shops and dining. An address here can put your stay in the same area as your street walks. Look at the exact approach rather than treating every address labelled Gion as the same location. Public streets, private entrances and the entrance to your accommodation need to remain distinct in your route planning.
Hanamikoji has traffic, so keep to a considerate walking line and leave entrances clear when stopping to navigate. Shirakawa and Shinbashi offer another part of the district to explore, with wooden facades and the waterside townscape. Read the Hanamikoji and Shirakawa guide before arranging your first walk. The guided Gion and Hanamikoji activity here includes an English-speaking guide and is an outing during your stay.

Discover the district during your stay
A Gion and Hanamikoji walk with an English-speaking guide gives context to the streets around your chosen base.
Shijo-Kawaramachi, Pontocho and Kyoto Station
Shijo-Kawaramachi offers a central reference point west of the river. Pontocho is a separate hanamachi on that western side, so label it correctly when comparing neighbourhoods. The city describes a walk of about 13 minutes from Shijo-Kawaramachi across the Kamo bridge to Yasaka Shrine. That can help you judge a central base, but add the walk between your own accommodation and the starting point.
Kyoto Station is the arrival and interchange option. Reaching Gion by rail involves the JR Nara Line to Tofukuji and a change to Keihan for Gion-Shijo. Another approach uses the subway via Karasuma Oike to Higashiyama, followed by a walk towards Yasaka. A station-area stay therefore works differently from sleeping in the eastern district. Use the arrival guide to compare the actual connection you will use.

Kyoto accommodation tax from 1 March 2026
The accommodation tax applies per person, per night, using the accommodation charge without meals or consumption tax and including the associated service charges. The five bands below take effect on 1 March 2026. They are tax thresholds, so keep them separate from a room quotation and its meal plan. When comparing bookings, identify the part of the charge used as the accommodation basis.
Pay the tax at the property unless it has already been collected through your booking platform or travel agency. Keep the payment record available to avoid paying it twice. The city leaflet describes the tax without separating Japanese and foreign guests. Ask how your booking handles the levy when organising your arrival payment, rather than adding it again merely because a booking came through an intermediary.
| Accommodation basis per person, per night | Tax per person, per night |
|---|---|
| Under 6,000 JPY | 200 JPY |
| 6,000 to under 20,000 JPY | 400 JPY |
| 20,000 to under 50,000 JPY | 1,000 JPY |
| 50,000 to under 100,000 JPY | 4,000 JPY |
| 100,000 JPY or more | 10,000 JPY |
Arriving with luggage and preparing your stay
Arrange luggage storage or a drop-off before sightseeing, as requested in the city guidelines published on 2 October 2026. This is a planning step rather than a promise of an available locker. Carry the accommodation arrival instructions, and leave time to get from your chosen station to the address before meeting a guide. Keep cash available too: some purchases and temple admissions require it.
Once settled, choose a walk, a cultural performance or a tea activity around your interests instead of filling every gap with another journey. Respect private property, keep roads clear, avoid pursuing geiko or maiko and obtain permission before photographing them. The seasonal guide helps you allow for summer heat or a cool winter evening. These practical choices shape the stay more clearly than a neighbourhood label alone.
Frequently asked questions
Which area suits visits to eastern cultural sights?
Gion and Higashiyama are the eastern base to consider. Compare the exact address with your intended sights and arrival route.
Is Pontocho part of Gion?
Pontocho is a separate hanamachi west of the Kamo. Gion lies on the eastern side, so account for the river crossing.
What if my accommodation tax was already collected?
Keep your booking payment record and show it when arranging payment at the property. Tax already collected through a platform or travel agency should not be paid twice.
