How to get to Gion from Kyoto Station
Deciding how to get to Gion starts with the place you want to visit. Gion lies in eastern Kyoto, beside the Yasaka Shrine area. Gion-Shijo is the useful Keihan station for entering the district, while Higashiyama subway station offers a different approach towards the shrine. Save the actual address of your accommodation or meeting point rather than using the neighbourhood name alone.
From Kyoto Station, take the JR Nara Line to Tofukuji and change to Keihan for Gion-Shijo. The Keihan fare between Tofukuji and Gion-Shijo is 180 JPY for an adult one way under the tariff effective 1 October 2025. That fare covers the Keihan leg; budget separately for the JR journey. Keep the interchange in your route notes so that a station name does not get mistaken for your final destination.
Subway and walking approaches
The subway alternative runs from Kyoto Station on the Karasuma Line to Karasuma Oike, then on the Tozai Line to Higashiyama. The city describes about 15 minutes of train travel. Add time for the walk through Jingu-michi and Maruyama towards Yasaka, as well as your own time navigating the stations. This makes sense when the shrine side of the district is your first stop.
From central Shijo-Kawaramachi, the city gives about 13 minutes on foot across the Kamo bridge to Yasaka Shrine. Walking can be a useful choice instead of waiting in Shijo traffic. The shrine operator gives about 5 minutes from Gion-Shijo and 8 minutes from Kyoto-Kawaramachi for its own approaches. These describe different starting points. Use the Yasaka Shrine guide to plan the visit after arrival.

Bus 206, EX100 and fares
Bus 206 connects Kyoto Station with the Gion stop. The ordinary flat fare is 230 JPY for adults and 120 JPY for children. EX100 also serves Gion from Kyoto Station on weekends and designated public days off, with fares of 500 JPY and 250 JPY respectively. Use the EX100 designation when looking up the service; EX101 serves Gojozaka rather than being a direct Gion service.
City buses accept cash and IC cards including ICOCA, Suica, PASMO and PiTaPa. An IC card is a way to pay, so compare the actual journeys rather than expecting a discount. The Subway & Bus 1-Day Pass costs 1,100 JPY for adults or 550 JPY for children and includes the sightseeing limited express without a supplement. Its validity is one day. Decide whether a pass fits the transport you plan to use.

Taxi and transfer from Kansai Airport (KIX)
A private airport transfer can cover the journey from Kansai Airport to Kyoto. The transfer booking service covers this city route; agree the exact Gion destination address before booking. Keep the accommodation address and its arrival instructions available, particularly when your final walking approach uses small streets.
Choose a suitable public arrival point with the transfer service rather than arranging access into private lanes or temple grounds. Treat the airport journey and any sightseeing meeting point as separate arrangements. The local guided walk on this page begins in Kyoto; plan your airport arrival and luggage arrangements independently of that activity.

Your first walk and dated autumn changes
The local orientation tour meets at the Izumo-no-Okuni statue by the river and Shijo bridge. Its directions use exit 5 of Gion-Shijo followed by a street crossing. Guide service is included. Arrive at the meeting point ready to walk, with luggage already dealt with; this is a local activity rather than an airport transfer.
For autumn 2026, additional bus 106 services run on weekends and designated public days off from 31 October through 29 November 2026. EX100 has a changed approach on 21 to 23 and 28 to 29 November 2026, ending on 29 November. Read the date on any temporary notice before using it for another journey. Our accommodation areas and seasonal planning pages help connect arrival with the rest of your stay.
